What to Expect on Your First Discovery Flight

Most people picture a Discovery Flight as a scenic tour, but that's not really what it is. At Pilot Instructional Center, we run it as your actual first flight lesson. If you've been curious about what it takes to become a pilot, this is the easiest way to find out. Here's roughly how the day goes, and why it tends to be a better starting point than reading another article about flying.

You Don't Need to Prepare Much

No flight hours, no aviation background, nothing to study beforehand. Show up with questions if you have them. Wear something comfortable, closed-toe shoes, and bring a camera if you've got one. The view of Kansas City from a few thousand feet is worth capturing.

It Starts on the Ground

Before you get near the airplane, you'll sit down with a Certified Flight Instructor for a briefing that's really your first ground school session. Your instructor covers how the plane's controls work and what you'll feel once you're airborne - lift, weight, thrust, drag, and how a pilot balances all four. This is also the best time to ask whatever's on your mind, whether that's about where flying could take you or just how safe the whole thing actually is.

Walking the Plane

From there, you and your instructor head out to the aircraft for the preflight inspection - something every pilot does before every flight. You'll check the control surfaces, look at fuel levels, and get a feel for the plane's overall condition. It sounds procedural, but it's actually where a lot of the mystery around flying starts to fall away.

Then You Fly It

Preflight done, it's time to go. You'll take the left seat with your instructor beside you. They'll handle takeoff, but once you're at a safe altitude, the controls come to you. You'll try some gentle turns, a climb, a descent, all while getting a view of the Kansas City area most people never see. This is usually the part people remember most.

What You'll Actually Pick Up

By the end, you'll have a working sense of basic aerodynamics, how the plane responds when you move the controls, along with what the yoke, rudder pedals, and throttle each do. You'll also get a first look at the instrument panel and start to understand what those gauges are actually telling you, plus a taste of the situational awareness that comes with seeing the world from the cockpit.

Back on the Ground

After landing, you and your instructor talk through the flight, what worked, what felt strange, and any questions that came up once you were actually in the air. Your instructor logs the flight time in a pilot logbook, and that time counts toward a Private Pilot Certificate if you decide to keep going.
